Comment:

 If you open the preferences window again after you have done that the
 first time does the memory use of pidgin grow by the same amount again?
 Similarly, with the conversation windows. X applications (in general, and
 X itself) tend not to 'release' memory until it is needed by something
 else, so the numbers are not always as accurate as they might be. If you
 see the same growth each time the preferences window is opened then there
 might be something going on here (I would suspect your GTK+ theme first).
