 I had this exact issue happen to me today.  Pidgin would crash every time
 right after start up (GTalk buddies would load fine, but it would crash
 before the AIM buddies were loaded).  So I logged onto AIM Express and
 noticed that one of my buddies had a longer than usual status message.  I
 removed him from my buddy list and then signed on again with pidgin, and
 this time it didn't crash, so I assumed it had something to do with his
 status message.  The only other thing that I did notice was that one of
 the characters in my buddies status message was showing up as a square box
 character in AIM Express, like it was an unsupported character.  So maybe
 it has something to do with what is in the message and not the length.
