Since what seems to me a lot of time, Pidgin stores contacts' Friendly
 Names completely at random.
Let me explain: when I log in, my buddy list populates with both the
online and offline contacts, then updates the current Friendly Names and
Buddy Icons for online ones. But, when they go offline, Pidgin doesn't
always store the Friendly Names changes. Sometimes, they didn't get stored
at all in the first place, thus leaving the buddy's email when he's not
 online.
The result is a buddy list of offline contacts populated by old Friendly
Names/emails, but new Buddy Icons: messy, as you can see in the attached
 image.
I just came across something similar @ ticket:4062 .It's said to be
solved, but seems not to be....
