 Last night I attempted to patch Pidgin and after it started uninstalling
 and patching things, new version of GTK etc, it started throwing errors
 for unpacking .dll's. I finally had to ignore about 30-40 of these errors
 because trying again didn't work. Pidgin would no longer even run at that
 point so I tried uninstalling the whole mess, redownloading the install
 files and installing a fresh copy. Sadly the same thing happened except
 this time it informed me that it couldn't uninstall the previous version,
 then the .dll ordeal started over again.
 After trying this 4 or 5 times and checking all the bug reports, I finally
 did a system restore to a couple of days ago trying to recover my last
 version that worked (2.4.1), however although Pidgin at least runs and is
 usable to send and receive messages all of the icons and coloring is
 completely gone from the program, I have no idea what the install could
 have done to cause this lasting problem and I haven't found any tickets
 that come close to this problem.

 This is the info copied from the running version that 'works'
 Debugging Information

 {{{
   Plugins: Enabled
   SSL: SSL support is present.
   GTK+ Runtime: 2.12.8
   Glib Runtime: 2.14.6
 }}}

Comment:

 Pidgin and all other GTK+-using applications need to be closed when doing
 the installation, as Windows does not let a program (in this case the
 installer) overwrite files that are "in use" (i.e. being used by a running
 Pidgin or X-Chat or Gajim or Gimp).

 If you don't have any of those programs running when using the installer,
 please get at least a partial list of the DLLs that generate errors.
