 Bit of a long shot here, but looking at the installed packages you have I
 noticed one that is absent (compared with my Ubuntu install) and that's
 pidgin-data.

 FYI, the packages that comprise Pidgin for me are:

 pidgin
 libpurple0
 libpurple-bin
 pidgin-data
