New description:

See attached trace file. Also see the debug.log file.

Currently Running Win2K Pro at Service Pack 4.

When selecting Tools/Preferences, Pidgin crashes with the proverbial
 windows message box:

Pidgin has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created.

 No option available except OK.

Sorry for the delay...had to find a faster connection...takes too long to
download the files on a 23,600 connection :(

Have installed the debug version: pidgin-2.5.8-debug.exe along with a
newer version of GTK: gtk-runtime-2.10.6-rev-a.exe (that was required by
 the debug version).

Pidgin no longer crashes when selecting Tools/Preferences. No RPT file is
 created in C:\Program Files\Pidgin.

Although the Tools/Preferences dialog window now displays, at 800x600
resolution you can't view it completely :( (1024x768 is too small...)

Comment:

 Replying to [comment:5 deryni]:
 > That debug.log contains no useful information as it was generated when
pidgin was already running and as such just indicates that fact. You need
to get the .RPT crash report file from when pidgin crashes.
