 I understand where you are coming from - but I think the developers are
 partially at the mercy of the GUI toolkit, specifically the layout
 mechanism.

 It's rather difficult to tell a GUI layout to resize in a particular way,
 particularly if it contains two or more items that are resizable (the list
 and the text area).
