 Yes, it's still an issue in 2.5.8, reproducible without plugins.

 It's the exclamation point, as far as I can tell.

 I held down some keys until more than 13 and less than 14 lines were full
 of "sdasdasdasdasda"... and then filled up the 14th line with exclamation
 points. Pidgin then hangs, using up an entire CPU core. Between the 14th
 and 15th lines is where the scroll bar would normally appear. Under normal
 circumstances, the exclamation point does not appear to wrap at the edge
 of the input area, so this must be causing some conflict with the
 appearance of the scroll bar.

 Interestingly, typing more than 14 lines of /\w+/, backspacing until the
 scroll bars disappear, and then typing exclamation points doesn't cause
 the hang.
