 Tested this now on 2.5.8 on Ubuntu 9.04.

 Added the text "I promise I’ll always, always be there." as my away
 message and set my status to away.

 I have myself in my buddy list and the message appears fine (in both the
 buddy list under my account name and the tooltip).

 Also had a friend view that same away message as I appeared on her iChat
 and was all good.

 So, is this still occurring?
