 Well, I gave this another spin on Pidgin 2.5.8, Ubuntu 9.04 with my Gmail
 account.  It works for me.

 So, are you using a non-Gmail XMPP account?  Maybe you have a somewhat
 corrupted blist.xml?  I'm clutching at straws here...but it doesn't make
 sense!
