Comment:

 I checked with pidgin version 2.5.8 and its current gtk+ 2.14.7 - still
 the same problem.

 I suspect the (now legacy) "Extended Preferences" plugin is not working
 properly with the new gtk+ releases.  Development of the plugin has
 stopped 2007 at version 0.7, see http://gaim-
 extprefs.sourceforge.net/ep.shtml
 It's most probably abandoned.

 I'll close this ticket and file a RFE instead.  I still think pidgin
 should have an option to hide the useless taskbar entry (at least on
 systems that have a system tray, like Windows). Every IM tool I know of
 does support this.
