 Just tried this now with Pidgin 2.5.8.

 Added the IRC channel #ubuntu but called it #monkey.  Double clicked on
 #monkey in my buddy list, the chat window popped up...it was called
 #monkey in the buddy list and #monkey in the chat window title.

 So is this resolved?
