Comment:

 There is no uniform maximum length for protocols, nor is there even a real
 way to know per-protocol lengths (for example, neither XMPP nor IRC have
 know-able limits, only relative guidelines). Often, the best we can do is
 just try to send it and hope we get an error back, but even that doesn't
 work (e.g. IRC doesn't return errors, it just silently truncates).

 You can retrieve the message that wasn't sent by pressing Ctrl-Up while
 the entry area is focused, allowing you to edit it by hand and re-send
 parts.

 Additionally, a message splitter has existed in the
 [http://plugins.guifications.org/ Purple Plugin Pack] since their version
 2.4.0 (it's not listed on the wiki, it looks like).
