Comment:

 Do you have an "GTE_CyberTrust_Global_Root.pem" in /etc/ssl/certs? (or a
 "4d654d1d.0" in the same directory).

 When compiled by distributions, Pidgin relies on the system's CA certs for
 authentication. In this case, I think you may need to run update-ca-
 certificates as root and ensure that the certificate I mention is
 selected.
