This issue might be fixed, or it might be in Ubuntu's domain to fix it (I
have already reported it to Ubuntu's bug tracker, here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+bug/393943). I'll report
it here as well anyway, just in case. I also know I'm not running the
latest pidgin version, but quite frankly I don't know how to install it.
I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty and the latest Pidgin available in its
repositories. Suddenly, pidgin broke and would no longer launch. I do not
know which version of pidgin I ran before, but afterwards I was running
2.5.5. I do not know if it was pidgin that was updated or any other
package which caused this problem.
When starting pidgin with "-d" switch, I get the following output:
jan at hp530:~$ pidgin -d
(19:09:12) prefs: Reading /home/jan/.purple/prefs.xml
(19:09:12) prefs: Finished reading /home/jan/.purple/prefs.xml
(19:09:12) dbus: okkk
(19:09:12) plugins: probing /usr/lib/pidgin/timestamp_format.so
... everything normal until ...
(19:09:13) plugins: probing /usr/lib/purple-2/pidgin-libnotify.so
(19:09:13) plugins: probing /usr/lib/purple-2/offlinemsg.so
(19:09:13) plugins: probing /usr/lib/purple-2/libxmpp.so
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Purging or reinstalling basically every packet having "pidgin" or "purple"
in its name did not help. Deleting the .purple folder in my home folder
did not help.
Finally, I found that moving/deleting the libxmpp.so file solved the
problem. Fortunatelly I am not using XMPP (and I have never done so).
If theres anything more you need to know, please let me know and I will do
my best to supply it.
