 What version of cyrus sasl2? What version of the cyrus-sasl2 base
 modules/plugins?

 If you ''''temporarily'''' remove the /usr/lib/sasl2/*digestmd5* modules
 (You can delete them and doing "apt-get --reinstall install
 libsasl2-modules" to get them back), does Pidgin crash at startup? What
 pidgin plugins and third-party protocol plugins do you have loaded?
