 Hmm, it's possible older versions of XMPP support in Pidgin used one of
 the old(er) methods for avatars (IQ-based avatars), which Pidgin doesn't
 currently supports, in which case this would closed as wontfix.  We also
 support PEP-based avatars (though support for receiving those was broken
 for a few versions in the 2.5.x series).

 If this is still an issue, could you get a debug log of connecting with an
 older client where buddy icons work (if at all possible) and one of
 connecting with a recent version of Pidgin? You may email the logs
 directly to me if you'd like (my nickname -at- pidgin.im).
