 Here is a crash which doesn't appear to be gstreamer related.  This only
 happens when I enable IRC (Freenode).  The crash apparently happened when
 displaying the string "Conversation with NickServ on Mon 20 Jul 2009
 11:18:02 AM EST:".

 To answer the questions:   gstreamer-properties runs.  The Autodetect and
 OSS choices give sound output.  Other options give error messages.  Pidgin
 sound option was set to auto before.  None of the sound options that
 Pidgin works produces sound for me, except for setting it to command
 sndfile-play.  If I set it to ALSA, pidgin will crash as soon as it tries
 to play a sound.

 So I think this is definitely related to sound.
