 My laptop was recently re-imaged due to hard drive crash. It appears that
 I installed version 2.5.1 rather than 2.5.4 which originally reported the
 problem.

 I was able to SUCCESSFULLY delete an empty group with 2.5.1.

 I will see later about upgrading to 2.5.4 and retrying, and then going to
 2.5.8 and trying again.
