 Can you give more information please:

 What plugins do you have enabled?
 Are you using Pidgin 2.5.5 or the most recent version - please try with
 most recent version.
 Is your processor/computer under load at the time?
 Are you running a lot of applications at the time?
 Can you reliably play sounds/music with say Rhythmbox/Banshee/etc?
