 i decided to run pidgin with 'pidgin -n' from terminal, untick the
 accounts and try them one by one.

 Facebook wasnt the issue it was Skype, unticked it and everything is back
 to normal - the no logon option is very useful.  ill guess that most new
 people to linux dont know the --help option for terminal to figure out -n
 is available to them
