 Ah, that's probably due to a shoddy home router that can't handle DNS
 queries. See

 In any event, there's some firewall blocking the initial connection when
 you hardcode in 'talk.google.com'. You can work around it (which is what
 the official Google Talk client does) by checking "Use Old-Style (port
 5223) SSL", set the Connect Port to 443, and the connect server to
 "talk.google.com"
