 I'm not clear on how the existence of a plugin fixes the problem.  It
 doesn't address the potential problems mentioned by chemistrydioxide
 above.  And shouldn't Pidgin do something less destructive automatically?
 Clearly many people are overlooking Ctrl+Up (I did. A coworker did. People
 above did. #8651 did.)  The end result is that people perceive Pidgin as
 trashing their work.

 Option 6: Append to the existing error message "You can use Ctrl+Up to
 review and modify your message."  While it's crude it avoids the potential
 problems of other solutions while giving clueless people a little help.
 It should certainly cut down on the number of people who post bugs that
 Pidgin eats their work. :-)

 While we're at it, if there is a limit that Pidgin can know about, a
 counter would be nice to make it easier for people to hand segment
 messages into pieces.
