 I tried this with another ichat (over AIM) user, and their text showed up
 on my screen as black font on blue background.  On their end it was black
 font on purple background.

 While chatting with them, I closed the chat window, when they sent me a
 new message, which opened up a new pidgin chat window, their text was
 black font on purple background.
