Comment:

 After Adium/Pidgin reported that you were locked out and before trying the
 real yahoo client, did you try logging into your yahoo account somehow,
 maybe through their web interface, maybe to check mails?

 Is it possible that there were failed login attempts that you are not
 aware of.
 (Unfortunately yahoo does not provide us with any account activity logs,
 as far as I know.)[[BR]]
 You can try this: Create a second yahoo account, add that to Adium, and
 enable both the accounts. Now compare login over them for a day or two,
 and report the comparison.

 I just want to make sure that its a bug and not account specific problem
 (ie someone trying to illegally access you account).[[BR]]
 Note: Pidgin 2.5.6 and Adium 1.4b6 use different login procedures, old and
 new respectively. Having the same problem logging from the both is highly
 improbable in case of a bug in libpurple.
