 FYI I suspect that this might not be Pidgin's fault:

 If the buddies were "orphaned" they would show up in the group "Orphans."
 I suspect this is not the case.  I also suspect people at AOL are
 scrabbling to figure out how to restore people's buddy lists, and your
 best bet is to just wait and see what happens.

 I'm going to close this for now, because I believe this problem to be on
 AOL's side of things.  If I hear otherwise I'll re-open it.
