#9397: Display (NULL) in QQ protocol
-----------------------------+----------------------------------------------
 Reporter:  CybAut           |     Owner:  rekkanoryo
     Type:  defect           |    Status:  new
Component:  unclassified     |   Version:  2.5.6
 Keywords:  QQ NULL Windows  |
-----------------------------+----------------------------------------------
 (02:12:33) MINGYU: (NULL)
 (02:13:46) (NULL): All I see is: "(NULL)"
 (02:16:21) MINGYU: (NULL)
 (02:16:34) (NULL): Sorry, I don't see anything :(
 (02:17:15) MINGYU: (NULL)
 (02:17:52) (NULL): Give me a minute I will switch to standard QQ

 ::EXAMPLE::
 From conversation log;

 This is how my conversations go in Pidgin while using QQ for MS WinXP

 Notes on above example;
 * User MingYu is using Chinese version of QQ (most of the same problems
 persist in English version too).
 * User (NULL) is me using 2.5.6 but I get the same in 2.4.0. My nick was
 changed to (NULL) upon installation with no input from me

 I have been using pidgin as my primary (multiple) IM client for several
 years. Aside from Meebo's portability, use behind firewalls and browser
 base protocol, I have enjoyed Pidgin. Many of the Linguist at the Defense
 Language Institute (computer literate ones) have come to depend on Pidgin
 because of the improbability that someone can inject a virus into our
 conversations. None of those that we are communicating with have any clue
 that we filter their content.

 I as well as many of the other Chinese linguists have had to revert to the
 standard QQ platform.

 Additional notes (general);
 * Disabling all plugins (then restarting client) had no effect
 * Reinstallation of 2.3.1 confirms bug is still in the latest release of
 2.5.6

 Unlike some other bug patrons I am not willing to give up Pidgin so
 easily. I understand that QQ (in Pidgin) works fine on the Chinese WinXP
 but is not compatible with the English version for some reason. I can't be
 certain that last comment is correct because I haven't gotten anyone with
 a Chinese OS convinced enough to use it.

 I understand this particular bug has been going on since 2.4.0 and has
 been closed several times as: (FIXED) (DUPLICATE) but alas it is not so. I
 am not anxious to use 2.3.1 but will do so for a short time to see if I
 can find out what the difference is that makes this problem persist.

 Problems;

 1. Sent messages sent display as (NULL) for receiver, ie: messages are
 displayed correctly only in sender's window (see example)

 2. Pidgin nick changes to: (NULL)
 Note: Nicks of Pidgin user(s) are changed and displayed as (NULL) in any
 QQ and Pidgin users window

 Some of my foreign more computer literate friends Chinese or not are not
 so cordial in their request to fix this problem. It may well be that the
 original Chinese culture was to bend with the wind and water, the current
 generation tends to think that complaining threatening pulling out of
 patronage is the best course of action haven't got a clue as to how the
 Open Source Universe works.

 If I understood this platform well enough, had time outside my regular
 military duties I would really like to find this bug myself. Finally
 putting this bug to bed would be a great coup d'etat.

 Thanks for any help you may provide.
