 Started having this problem today for the first time ever. I'm running
 Redhat Fedora GNU/Linux v11, Pidgin v2.5.6-1, and libpurple v2.5.6-1. The
 /etc/hosts work-around described in bug 9386 solved it for me, so it seems
 to be a DNS issue of some sort.
