New description:

we can already copy/paste text in the input box (where we type messages to
send), but we can't copy text from the conversation box (the read-only
text box that shows existing messages) with ctrl+c. i find this very
desirable and not supporting it can cause misunderstandings between
 friends:

imagine a user presses ctrl+c in the conversation box and believes it has
copied the selected text and then goes to the input box for another buddy
and presses ctrl+v and Enter (without checking if the text pasted is
really what was just "copied"), he would actually have pasted something he
copied to the clipboard earlier, which can be a password or other
 sensitive information.
