My pidgin 2.5.6 doesn't work for me. But my old gaim 1.5.0 is fine. This
tells me they still support both the old auth method and the new auth
 method (which is in
 http://pidgin.im/pipermail/devel/2009-May/008122.html).

I deduct the latest Yahoo change is in enforcing their current protocol
with the "current" (it's not new to Y!, but new to pidgin) auth method.
Pidgin move to protocol 16, so it could support p2p file transfer and
other fancy features in the new protocol. However, I vaguely remember
talks about not able to crack the auth method in protocol 16. However,
since Y allows people to use old auth method with the new protocol, there
isn't much incentive for pidgin to move to the new auth method, or at
 least until now. :)

For those (I am one of them) that don't care about the "fancy" features,
could we somehow go back down to protocol 14 or lower. So we can use
 pidgin.

The other option is to use gaim 1.5.x. However, I cannot seemed to find
any old binaries on the web.
