Comment:

 You are aliasing buddies by right-clicking on them and selecting Alias?
 And those aliases are going away? Are you using some other non-pidgin
 client between when you set it and when it fails?

 If this continues to be a problem you may want to consider loading and
 using the Buddy Notes plugin to allow you to set a stricly local note on
 the buddy which you can use as a second copy of the alias, as a
 workaround.
