Comment:

 Assuming you want to set a background color for all GTK+ applications or
 all of pidgin you shouldn't need to target specific widgets, a style
 applied to all widgets in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 or ~/.purple/gtkrc-2.0 should work
 for the chat window user list. Is that not sufficient?
