 I have no idea if that error is connected, but the current version of perl
 is 5.10.0-11.1ubuntu2.2 but the debs on http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-
 developers/ppa need at least perl 5.10.0-23. So something is wrong but I
 donno who is responsible... (might even be myself ;-)...

 But again, I have no idea if that is the source of the error. My
 alternative is to drop down to pidgin 2.5.5 (which is the ubuntu-standard-
 version) but that woun't get support here.
