Comment:

 You have a locally installed libpurple in the `/usr/local/` prefix. Remove
 that (or re-run `ldd` as root) and verify that the line in {{{ ldd `which
 pidgin` }}} shows that libpurple.so.0 is in /usr/lib, not /usr/local/lib.
