 Great, thanks.  I suspect this NEWS change is the cause:

 ** libgnutls: Small byte reads via gnutls_record_recv() optimized.

 The reason why you see this and nobody else may be that pidgin's pull
 function seems to return EAGAIN quite often.  That's OK but rather
 untypical.

 I'm trying to identify the code and provide a patch that you can test on
 top of 2.8.1 to see if you get it to work.
