 I like the "messenger-lock" feature of Live Messenger Plus.
 You can define a LOCK and an UNLOCK keyboard shortcut, which:

 - hides all chat windows, the buddy list and the taskbar icon on LOCK
 (with Pidgin it should also hide guifications, sounds...)
 - restores all hidden windows on UNLOCK
