New description:

 Since the changes in Yahoo servers and the recent login problem for
 Pidgin, which was fixed in 2.5.7, There seems to be some problem with
 avatars.

 Tested with Pidgin-2.5.7 both on linux and win32 as follows :
 Yahoo account on Pidgin/linux : set an avatar, having myself in the list
 doesn't show it.
 Yahoo client of someone in my list shows either no avatar, a black square
 or the avatar itself.
 The black square seems to show up for PNG8 files 96x96 >20k. However,
 these were known to work last week.
 The exact same file, if set in Yahoo client works.

 Same test, same result on win32, testing with 2 accounts on same machine,
 one in Pidgin, one in Yahoo.

 Using the Yahoo client (8), having myself in the list, showed the icon
 change immediately.
 All icons tested were PNG8 between 5 and 25kB, all known to work
 previously.

 Furthermore, changed avatar on a Yahoo client (tested 8 and 9), 10 minutes
 later pidgin still did not show any change.

 Tested on 3 machines, 2 win32, 1 linux and about 6 accounts total, with
 the help of 3 other accounts on Yahoo client.

 I don't know if this is a temporary issue on Yahoo servers or something
 that they changed is now affecting pidgin's ability to work with them.

 I'll add a debug window extract from pidgin, while setting an avatar, in
 the next message.

 Logged into a Yahoo account. No buddy icon (avatar). Start debug window.
 Choose a buddy icon (avatar). Wait several minutes. Having yourself in the
 list shows the result of setting an avatar. over 15min have passed since I
 set the avatar, still no change. Usually it took about 5 seconds to show
 up.
