 Silly user (me) error.

 Pidgin allows you to select different versions of QQ clinet but defaults
 to QQ2005 which is no longer supported by QQ. Changing it to QQ2008
 resolved the issue. To get to it, I went to
     Accounts -> QQ -> edit Account -> advanced -> Client version -> QQ2008
