 Ubuntu (...and Debian) both package Finch separately from Pidgin. A large
 number of X11 libraries are brought in during an installation due to apt-
 get's default (at least on my systems) installation of 'Recommends'
 packages.

 Using `apt-get install --no-install-recommends <foo>` will dramatically
 reduce the install size of the 'dependencies'.

 All that said, deryni still asked a question. :)
