 I upgraded to Fedora 11 yesterday and experienced the exact same problem
 with both the default version of Pidgin (2.5.5) and 2.5.6.
 It may help locating the problem that I was able to get Pidgin connecting
 properly to MSN by disabling SELinux.

 In case someone stumbles here via a web search, to disable SELinux:
 System -> Administration -> SELinux Management, Set System Default
 Enforcing Mode to 'Disabled'. It may be necessary to 'Relabel on next
 reboot', I did, so I don't know if it will work without doing it.
