New description:

 This may be non-fixable at Pidgin's end but....

 In Ubuntu (I think in Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 and onwards), Pidgin nicely
 integrates with the user switcher function. See the attached screenshot:
 changing the status on the switcher drop down changes the Pidgin status
 and vice versa.

 However, when upgrading via the Pidgin Ubuntu PPA, this breaks: it only
 works one way (changing status in Pidgin). (Re)changing the status in the
 user switcher doesn't do anything (neither the switcher nor Pidgin changes
 status).

 Fairly minor, and may be down to Ubuntu's config., but would be nice to
 correct if possible in the PPA release.

 I can't confirm whether this still happens in the latest Ubuntu release
 (9.04)... Occurred in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid).
