New description:

 This problem occurs in 2.5.7 and 2.5.8 - not sure if it happens in earlier
 versions. When I try to access the Tools > Preferences panel, pidgin will
 core dump. When I run pidgin -d, the relevant text is:

 (14:43:14) GLib: file gstrfuncs.c: line 1744: assertion `s2 != NULL'
 failed
 Pidgin 2.5.8 has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
 This is a bug in the software and has happened through
 no fault of your own.

 glib on Solaris 10 is 2.4.9.
