there must be something else going on here.

I have a very similar problem to the one posted here, and have additional
symptoms that may help identify it.

I'm running pidgin on WXP. What I find is that copy/paste work fine until
I run VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.2.

When that is running, copying and pasting work fine for for everything
 except pidgin.
And copying *from* something else *to* pidgin seems to work ok too.

But pasting data copied *from* pidgin is limited. Most times it doesn't
paste anything. But I can get it to work with certain destinations, such
as into the Outlook message editor. And the debug window shows the same
 OpenClipboard message reported above.

What I'm suspecting is that pidgin is only supplying the data in one
format (html?), and that it can be pasted if the recipient can handle that
format. But if any other format is required it doesn't work. So for
instance I could copy into an Outlook message, then copy that and paste it
 elsewhere without difficulty.

I've seen comments elsewhere that you should shut down the conflicting
app. But why should that be necessary? Everything else in the system seems
to be able to copy/paste. Why not pidgin? I use VNC quite a lot, and need
to copy/paste to/from it, so shutting it down isn't an option.
