 Personally I have an intense dislike for the built-in single-instance
 checking code and would love nothing more than to remove it and instruct
 distributions to build with dbus support and install the startup.py script
 as their default pidgin launcher.

 That being said neither of these options actually fixes the problem, but
 they do attempt to require people to understand the issue rather than
 running into it blindly.

 It might be nice to see about having libpurple clients listen via dbus for
 pref changing signals emitted by other libpurple clients so as to get
 "live" updating of the shared preferences.
