Comment(by rekkanoryo):

 Picking up support for a library because it's a blessed GNOME dependency
 is a complete non-starter--we're not a GNOME application and in my opinion
 we have too much GNOME-specific crap in Pidgin already. (Our use of GTK+
 does '''''not''''' make us a GNOME application.) I also don't want to
 pick up another dependency that causes a crapton of conditional compiling
 due to Windows incompatibilities, and us implementing a libcanberra
 backend for win32 would be wasting time better spent on fixing actual bugs
 in Pidgin. There's also the fact that moving to libcanberra would likely
 require us to change API, which would require a version change to 3.0.0,
 which we are not currently ready to do.

 For the record, it is theoretically possible that in Pidgin 2.6.0 and
 later a plugin would be able to make libcanberra support happen.
