 on a WinXP Home Edition with sp3 and the latest updates as of 3/6/2009.

 I was in chat with another user via yahoo, both of us using pidgin. I was
 trying to send a file to him. From within pidgin I went to select the
 file, so I went to my desktop and clicked on a shortcut that links to the
 folder the file I wanted was in. Pidgin selects the shortcut link as the
 file and starts trying to send it. It was not able to go to the desired
 folder via the shortcut and then look at the available files.
