 I hadn't thought about that one. Closing the clipboard viewer that appears
 in Excel and Word seems to have done the trick. Its odd that this should
 only effect Pidgin though - I don't have any other GTK based applications
 to verify this with. It should be noted that sometimes in this scenario
 the first copy succeeds, but the rest fail.

 The work around would be that when copying fails to check whether any
 office application has the clipboard viewer open. Though, this is a
 workaround and not a solution, as other applications don't seem affected
 by it.
