 mike801: In your case, Gmail's server does not appear to be advertising
 starttls (which they require). Since I know their servers *do* advertise
 it (see below), I'd guess something between you and the other end is
 performing a MITM (or it's just a corporate firewall-ey device). On the
 advanced tab of the account options, check 'Require SSL/TLS' and 'Force
 old (port 5223) SSL', *uncheck* 'Allow plaintext auth...', and set the
 Connect port to 5223.

 MtnDew4Me: Please get a debug log of the connection attempt (disable the
 account, open the debug window, enable the account).
