Comment:

 The Local Alias in the Modify Account dialog is never going to show for
 any of your buddies, that is by design. That is what "local" means.
 Changing your remotely visible nickname/alias is generally an account
 action, check your various accounts Accounts->* menus. (Set Friendly Name
 for MSN, Set Nickname for XMPP accounts, etc.
