Comment:

 Sorry, the problem was encountered on my workstation at the office. I
 won't be returning there until Monday afternoon.

     Though I do know that I'm currently running pidgin 2.5.5 on that
 machine, and generally only install gtk through the pidgin installer, and
 always update when prompted.
